Grew to admire and believe in coffee farming

Luiz Benício Santos Torres worked at Banco do Brasil in the 1970s when he began implementing coffee cultivation in the Planalto da Conquista region of Bahia. As an inspector, he grew to admire and believe in coffee farming, which led him to start his activities in coffee cultivation in September 1975 at Fazenda Santa Helena.

His entire family is from the region, with most of them raised in Vitória da Conquista, BA. Fazenda Santa Helena is located in the municipality of Itambé, in the Planalto da Conquista region of Bahia, at an altitude of 930 meters. The Catuaí coffee variety is planted there, growing with the rainfall of the Mata region, requiring no irrigation.

The coffees from Fazenda Santa Helena have won awards: they have been champions in Bahia and recognized among the best coffees, winning the ABIC competition. The farm also participates in annual competitions in Bahia, ILLY, and BSCA, consistently achieving high scores and ranking among the best coffees.

Luiz Benício is one of the coffee producers who makes the best "Fully-Washed Pulped Naturals" in Bahia, Brazil, and the world. He closely oversees his harvest, which is done selectively and manually. The coffee is pulped on the same day of harvest and undergoes fermentation in degumming tanks for up to 36 hours. It is then dried on beaten-earth patios in the Caatinga, known as "Natural Dryers." For this reason, Fazenda Santa Helena is recognized as a producer of some of the best coffees in Bahia, Brazil, and the world.
