Paraná
Pioneer North
Brazil is the largest producer and exporter of coffee in the world and Northern Paraná is part of the main producing regions of the country.
The Pioneer North of Paraná was the gateway to the colonization of the entire northern region of Paraná, at the time when the collection of taxes was implemented to contain the advance of coffee growing in São Paulo, the farmers of the southeast felt motivated to make new plantations and chose the “purple and fertile lands” of Paraná.
The cultivation, with more than 100 years of history linked to the production of coffee, determined the arrival of different types of immigrants, generated the construction of railways and established economic relations in the region in cities such as Jacarezinho, Cornélio Procópio, Londrina and Maringá.
Recently, in May 2012, Norte Pioneiro do Paraná consolidated itself as a specialty coffee producing region in Brazil, through the Geographical Indication of Origin (IGP). The certification guarantees the origin, production processes and some sensory characteristics of the coffees from Norte Pioneiro. In addition to those from Paraná, only two other Brazilian regions, located in Minas Gerais, have the official registration, the Cerrado Mineiro Region, Matas de Minas and Serra da Mantiqueira.
This region has ideal climatic conditions for the production of fine coffees, with average annual temperatures between 19 and 22° C, resulting from the combination of altitude (from 500 to 900 m) and latitude (23 and 24° S). This provides a longer period between flowering and the physiological maturation of the beans, allowing a more intense fixation of the attributes and providing excellent characterization of the beverage. There is also the fact that rainfall allows cultivation without irrigation, or with complementary irrigation, unlike other regions where irrigation is mandatory.
The coffees in this region receive special care, from seedling, planting, harvesting, processing to storage. The plant must be more nourished and is grown under ideal conditions and its grade, on the SCAA ( Specialty Coffee Association of America ) standard quality scale , must be above 80 points
